Amateur Radio License Renewal

I recently received an email from ARRL reminding me that my license was up for renewal and was kind enough to provide me with the steps to renew. As you probably know, the FCC now charges $35 to renew your license and because of this the process is more complicated. While I’m a pretty knowledgeable and skilled at navigating different websites this process was more daunting than it should be. It made me wonder how people would do if they weren’t as familiar with these types of websites?

So here are some tips that might help you through this process.

  • If you are not a member of the ARRL, this might be a good time to join. They have a lot of resources to help. Here is their website discussing all the items you will need to do to renew your license.
  • Make sure you have your FRN and your password. This password is different from the license website password.
  • You will need to create an account with a new FCC website called “CORES”. This stands for Commission Registration System.
  • Once you create the new CORES account you will need to link this account with your FRN account.
  • Now you can start the renewal process using the ULS License Manager as normal.
  • The system will then send you to the new CORES site to pay your $35.
  • DON’T WAIT until the last minute to do this as you might have to call them for help. You can renew your license 90 days before it expires so you should have plenty of time.

Take your time and follow the instruction on ARRL website and you should be fine.
